COPE Survey Online

Step right up-or sit right down-to your computer and tell the Committee on Political Education what you think. What attributes do you think are crucial in a candidate running for the PVUSD Board of Trustees? This is your chance to speak up. Let us know your opinions and suggestions for possible candidates.

Go right now to www.pvft.net and click on Surveys in the blue menu bar. Follow the link to the survey questions concerning current trustees and what you think candidates need to qualify.

Please take the survey right away. You only have until the end of the school year, June 11 to respond. The following week, the PVFT COPE will review the results and develop a plan of action for the November campaign. Your committee hopes to recruit a slate of union-friendly candidates to run for the available seats on the school board. With your help, we will succeed!

Negotiations plus

PVFT negotiators are in training this week at the district offices. Interest-Based Bargaining takes center stage as Carolyn Savino and PVFT Executive Board members Stef Seffinger and Lisa Massey join our team-Carmen Gagne, George Lerek, Joe Manildi, Peggy Pughe and Michael Hillyer. PVUSD Trustees Rhea DeHart, Sharon Gray and Dan Hankemeier are also on board with the PVUSD team, the Superintendent, Associate and Assistant Superintendents, the heads of Transportation and Human Resources as well as CSEA leadership.

Interest-Based Bargaining places the emphasis on "win-win" mutual gains. The parties look for common ground and attempt to satisfy mutual interests. Traditional bargaining focuses on taking and defending positions . IBB emphasizes exploring the interests of the parties and reconciling them.

The PVFT team will wait until the fall to sunshine proposals for the new contract. Remember, the prior contract remains in force. Any changes in benefits must be ratified by you, PVFT members.

Lakeview teacher celebrates in D.C.
Ana England teaches math at Lakeview Middle School. In March Ana traveled to Washington, D.C. to pick up her Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching , the nation's highest commendation for K-12 math and science teachers. In her whirlwind week, Ana met President Bush, attended a White House summit, and spent a recipient-only evening at the Smithsonian featuring an Imax premiere. And the group testified at a congressional hearing on math and science.

Ana says this was the most amazing trip-she and the other 91 honorees enjoyed being treated like royalty day after day.

Visit www.cmc-math.org/PAEMST for program details. You might win the next award!

Conundrum

A car company can move its factories to Mexico and claim it's a free market.

A toy company can outsource to a Chinese subcontractor and claim it's a free market.

A major bank can incorporate in Bermuda to avoid taxes and claim it's a free market.

We can buy HP printers made in Mexico and shirts made in Bangaladesh.almost anything we want to buy made in many different countries.

BUT, heaven help the elderly who dare to buy their prescription drugs from a Canadian or Mexican pharmacy-that's called un-American, even though many of the drugs on the foreign markets originated in the United States.

So, does this suggest that the pharmaceutical companies have a very powerful lobby in Washington D.C.?

You can bet your gold-plated pill-box they do.
