EXECUTIVE BOARD MINUTES
APRIL 5, 2004

Present: Linda Espejo, Sarah Ringler, Bill Callahan, Joe Urban, Bruce Glass, Peter Hatch, Peggy Pughe, Mamiche Young, Stef Seffinger, Carolyn Savino, Alanna Alter. Facilitated by Carolyn Savino

Approval of minutes

Bill Callahan moved to approve the March General Membership and Executive Board minutes. Bruce Glass seconded. Approved.

Old Business

Executive Board Elections
The Executive Board agreed to have the membership move to approve the four candidates on the Executive Board at the General Membership meeting on April 19, 2004. The officers up for election are: Mamiche Young, Central Zone elementary V.P.; Peggy Pughe, AHS high school V.P.; Bruce Glass, Treasurer; Pat Christie, Alternative Education V.P.

Policies
The Executive Board agreed to approve the proposals for the membership placing items on the Executive Board and General Membership agendas, and how to deal with controversial issues. We will attach the proposals to the bylaws.

PVFT budget
General discussion of the PVFT income statement for 2003 and profit and loss for 2003. We reported that our auditor said a non-profit could run in a deficit with the amount we have in reserves, $100,000. Linda Espejo made the motion, Stef Seffinger seconded and all approved the budget with the changes noted below.

Audits
The CPA audit figure changed from $5,000 to $2000 because John Pooley is doing both the agency fee audit and the annual financial audit.

Scholarships
The Executive Board agreed to increase scholarships from $200 to $400 and change the numbers of recipients for a total of $5600.

Publicity
We will add $1200 to miscellaneous expenses to advertise union issues.

Website update
Andrea and Heather of Enlighten Designs came to discuss the overall design and gather suggestions. Andrea and Heather gave suggestions to board members to who signed up to provide information behind the buttons. We discussed how to promote the website. We will choose the headshots for Andrea by tomorrow.

Reel Work Film Festival
The festival celebrating labor takes place April 23-May 1 throughout Santa Cruz County. PVFT will donate $200 to the festival. Peter Hatch moved and Bruce Glass seconded. All approved.

Negotiation update
NEA/CTA trainer will come in to train the team later in spring, in May or June. The trainer would only do the training if Patrice Lerman trains with her. Patrice agreed. We submitted a demand to bargain letter that covers all aspects of NCLB including restructured days K-12.

President's stipend
CFT Treasurer Mike Nye said the president's stipend is sometimes based on teaching a three-hour class one night a week in adult education. Stef Seffinger moved a president's stipend at the rate of $300 per month. Bruce Glass seconded. Approved by 6 yes, 2 no, 2 abstentions.

Publicity Committee
We got one response from a parent about the furlough-day teach-in at the Plaza.
We need someone to organize the north county teach-in May 7 th in Aptos. This is in the middle of testing. Watsonville teachers might want to do it again in Watsonville.

PVUSD Board meetings
Executive Board members who attend need to write up notes to send to Enlighten Designs for posting on the web.

New Business

General membership meeting - April 19
Sarah Ringler and Linda Espejo will facilitate the meeting at 4:00 at AHS.
Agenda includes election of officers and approval of budget.

  • Lobby Days, April 25-27 in Sacramento
  • AFT Super Conference, May 13-15 in Philadelphia
  • Carmen Gagne and Peggy Pughe are going to attend the California Union Leadership School, June 6-11 at Asilomar
  • Western Union Leadership Institute, July 6-11 at Asilomar
  • AFT Convention, July 12-17 in Washington, D.C.

Monetary Issues

Laird Dinner
Members agreed to send some members to the April 22, 2004 event at the Cocoanut Grove.

Student Empowerment Project
50 th Anniversary Commemoration of Brown v. Board of Education on May 20. Sarah moved to contribute $50, Peggy seconded. All approved.

PVFT Scholarships
We decided to honor people with scholarship names: McCandles, Staver, DeHart, Arguello Special Education, the rest PVFT scholarships.

CFT General Store
We presented the idea of selling Rosie the Riveter tee-shirts, sweatshirts for purchase at meetings or to give to building reps.
