Francisco and PVFT MBCLC delegates,

The Carpenters/Building Trades and UNITE-HERE need help to push the developer, Barry Swenson, and Santa Cruz City Council to make the La Bahia boutique hotel renovation into a union built and staffed project. He needs people to show up at the Santa Cruz City Council meetings July 24 and Sept. 11 at 7 pm and at the Planning Commission July 19 at 7, all at 809 Center St. in Santa Cruz. They specifically want project labor agreement and card check neutrality and at the July 11th MBCLC meeting, we voted to oppose the project. Also, Barry Swenson has been lying and saying it's a union friendly project in order to give the Planning Commission and the Historical Preservation Commission the impression that there are no obstacles. I will be at the Sept. 11 meeting but we need to get others out as well. We need to build solidaity with the local labor movement.

Next monthly MBCLC meeting will be Wed. Aug. 1 at the PVUSD board room at 6:30. I will be on vacation for this meeting so I would like it if someones from our local to attend so our local can stay in touch.

If you want to carpool to the Sept. 11 Santa Cruz City Council meeting or to the MBCLC meetings let me know. I'm heading out of town for the next 3 weeks but you can call me after that at 420-0450 or send an email.

Also, to let you know, Boilermakers are also having trouble settling a contract with CEMEX up in Davenport. The Labor Day picnic is also coming up Monday, Sept. 3 at Delaveaga Park and if you want more information go to www.montereybaylabor.org. You should be getting notices of labor actions and monthly notices of meetings. Let me know if you aren't.

Hope you're having a good summer, Sarah Ringler
